Next CCR Convention to be Co-Hosted by SCVCR
August 30, 2010
The next CCR Annual Convention, to be held in Southern California the weekend of Jan. 28-30, 2011, will be co-sponsored by the Hollywood and Santa Clarita Valley chapters. During the weekend convention, statewide CCR officers will be elected and installed for the next two years. Participants also will network with other chapters and share ideas, as well as vote to endorse CRP officers, make any proposed changes to the bylaws, policies and procedures. Local legislators and Republican candidates will be invited to participate in a lively discussion of the issues of the day. The event will feature entertainment, guest speakers and a program that will make for an enjoyable weekend. It is imperative that we have a good turnout at this annual event. We are working with the Hollywood chapter to find a suitable location for this event; there's a good possibility the convention will be held in the Santa Clarita Valley. We'll update you further when we have more information.

Former Assemblyman Dr. Keith Richman Dies
August 2, 2010
CalID23RichmanDr. Keith Richman, the former state Assemblyman and longtime health-care advocate, died late Friday, July 30, following a year-long battle with brain cancer. His wife Suzan and his family were at his side when he passed at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The 56-year-old physician and philanthropist served in the Assembly from 2000 to 2006, becoming
a champion of better health care and bringing a unique perspective to Sacramento. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger referred to Richman as a "passionate public servant." Richman made partnerships with legislators on both sides of the aisle to work on issues such as pension reform, health care and workers comp, and he was honored during his very first term by being named "Rookie of the Year." He was a familiar and friendly face at many SCV Congress of Republicans' events, as well as other functions throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. After leaving office, he created the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility, which sought to educate and inform lawmakers and the public about state employee retirement benefit issues, as well as fiscally reponsible and fair solutions. Born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Nov. 21, 1953, he pursued a career in medicine as his father had before him. He attended UC Davis for his pre-med degree and was named a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. He went on to earn his master of public health and M.D. degrees at UCLA. The SCV Congress of Republicans will miss him dearly.

History Refresher: GOP Accomplishments Shouldn't be Forgotten
June 28, 2010
acm016Did you know that Republicans were the ones who freed the slaves. Republicans also passed the 14th Amendment that guaranteed due process and equal protection of the laws to all citizens. The original purpose of the 14th Amendment was to defend African-Americans from their Democrat oppressors in the post-Civil War South.
The principal author of the 14th Amendment was U.S. Rep. John Bingham (R-OH). In Congress, all votes in favor of the 14th Amendment were from Republicans, and all votes against it were from Democrats. Republicans also are responsible for the passage of the 15th Amendment, which extended the right to vote to African-Americans. In 1869, the Republican-controlled 40th Congress passed this amendment, with nearly all Republicans in Congress voting in favor, though a few abstained, saying it did not go far enough. Nearly all Democrats in Congress voted against it. The 15th Amendment was ratified the following year, but Democrats prevented most African-Americans from voting for nearly a century by using intimidation, poll taxes, registration fraud and literacy tests against them.
